What Does It All Mean?

Yamamoto is a common enough surname in Japan. The characters used to write it are 山本 which is a combination of 山 meaning mountain and 本 which is translated as bottom or origin. Therefore, the combination of the two is best described as mountain base. Takeshi is written using the character 武 while I couldn't find the proper translation for the characters たけし which are used to make up 武, the kanji definition is military or warlike. When you put it all together Yamamoto's full name translates to warlike mountain base. It really doesn't make much sense in translation however when taken metaphorically it could be thought of as Yamamoto being both powerful and sturdy which describes his fighting style well; he rarely losses a battle even when the odds are against him. Additionally, he keeps getting back up against all odds no matter how many times he gets hit. Yamamoto's bearing in his daily life could not be any less militaristic or warlike but in battle his eyes darkern and he becomes cold and somewhat detached as he fights his hardest.

Almost all of the major characters in Katekyo Hitman Reborn! are identified by a number in most fanworks and even a few official works. The numbering system is based on both the Japanese standard counting system and the old counting system. Yamamoto's number is defined by the beginning of his surname, "Yama" which is divided into "Ya" which is the old counting system's eight and "Ma" which while not directly related to either counting system could be short for "maru" which slang for zero. Put together Yamamoto's number is 80. Yamamoto
