The Rain Washes Everything Away

Each of the flame attributes in Katekyo Hitman Reborn! hold unique abilities. The rain flames release "tranquility" into the world around them. This allows the flames to slow down and weaken anything they touch to the point where they are helpless to fight against attacks. Additionally, the rain flames are described to be reminiscent to "the rain, which washes everything away". While Yamamoto himself is never physically seen washing anything; metaphorically he his personality reflects everything that makes up the rain element.

Yamamoto is a calming force for the team. His "no worries" personality always manages to keep the gang confident that they can overcome their enemies in the face of danger. Yamamoto's insistent claims that all of the life threatening situations are really just part of a mafia "game" gives him the strength he needs to triumph. During the Varia Arc Yamamoto keeps the groups spirits up by suggesting a "group huddle". This raises their spirits and puts Ryohei in the mood to win (I would have said fight but Ryohei is always in the mood to fight). This trend continues all the way through the arc and it serves to encourage the team. Despite the fact that any one of them could die Yamamoto manages to calm them down and keep everyone, most importantly Tsuna from panicking.

Yamamoto is also the most accepting of the guardians. He is always willing to "wash away" the past and make friends with his former enemies. When Chrome first appears Gokudera is suspicious and he tells her to stay away from Tsuna. Yamamoto responds that Gokudera should "Quit joking around!" and holds him back from hurting Chrome simply because she looks almost exactly like their old rival Mukuro. After the Varia Arc he is one of the only guardians who becomes friends with their Varia rivals. Yamamoto and Squalo get along fairly well and Squalo accepts Yamamoto as an informal student. Yamamoto even accepts that Byakuran, who nearly destroyed their futures and killed Yamamoto's father in what becomes an alternate future is alive and might not be a bad guy since he healed Yamamoto when he was in need. Yamamoto doesn't fight him the way most of the guardians would if faced with the same situation.

While Yamamoto is happy-go-lucky and always wears a smile compared to Tsuna and most of the guardians. His confidence actually works as a calming force amongst all of the strong-willed and explosive personalities displayed by the other guardians. Hibari, Ryohei, and Gokudera are all quick to fight and hold grudges; Chrome always works her hardest to fight the enemy before her but rarely does she express her opinions; Lambo is a child whose opinions change faster than the minutes in a day, and Tsuna struggles to find his own confidence and will try to prevent a battle becomes one hundred percent necessary, at which points he attacks without mercy. With all of his allies acting on instinct, Yamamoto is often left as the voice of reason and steady presence to calm down or encourage his fellow guardians and boss.
